Mail Server Hardware Requirements:
|
There was a time when skilled administrators had to toil over
the hardware side of a mail server. While this still can be the case for
large scale companies things are much simpler today even for users needing
thousands of accounts.
Both processor and memory prices have dropped significantly and typically a
system that will adequately run Windows NT or 2000 will also handle the mail
server functions.
Of course user count can be misleading because it really comes down to user
activity. 100 users with 1 message per day provide about the same impact
as 1 user with 100 messages.
With today's prices a Pentium III or Athlon system with 256 MB or RAM (more can
be added later if needed) and 2 drives configured in a mirror array provide an
ideal platform that will scale easily to thousands of users.
Rather than using an expensive SCSI drive you can purchase 2 EIDE drives for the
same price and use the built in software mirror feature of windows nt or 2000
server to provide data redundancy to protect against drive failure.
If you have a large number of users you may also wish to consider using multiple
NIC's (network interface cards) or redundant server NIC's.
