What to look for in a web mail interface and what does it
offer:
With so many mail server choices, and most offering web
mail, how do you choose the best solution?
Mail servers tend to have weaker interfaces that what clients have come to
expect from mature commercial free mail and web mail. This include
services such as hotmail.com or email.com. For this reason web mail is
typically used only in certain circumstances (in airports, when away from the
computer, hotels etc) and not used as a replacement for a regular mail client.
If web mail is to be the primary interface for your companies users then you
should look for a template based solution. This will offer you a way to
modify the look and feel of the interface and in some cases the functionality.
For most mail systems performance is not an issue given the state of today's
fast and economically priced hardware. See our article on hardware for
more details.
The main advantage of web mail is in the administrative options. This
allows users to manage their own passwords, forwarding and setting simply and
easily.
On the domain admin side if you manage multiple domains then domain
administrators can control settings and even create and remove users and
alias.
